The Best Dog Treats are Homemade

Easy Healthy Homemade Dog Treats

I could make easy “scoop” treats, and there are so many easy no bake dog treats, but these dog bone treats are shelf-stable and can be stored long term in a dog treat container.

I needed to find easy healthy homemade dog treats that used common ingredients I had in my kitchen and would easily roll out into dog bones.

Apple -Pumpkin Dog Treats Recipe (variation 2)

I created this version when I ran out of peanut butter. It doesn’t rise as much and you will need to add more flour because the ingredients contain more moisture.

Directions

Line sheet with parchment paper. Preheat oven to 350F

  1. In a mixer (I use my Kitchen Aid flat edge beater attachment) beat apple sauce and peanut butter until well mixed on medium speed. Add egg and beat for one minute.
  2. In a separate bowl mix flour, oats, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until well blended
  3. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix on low speed until the dough pulls apart from the side of the bowl.
  4. Sprinkle flour on a dry flat surface. Generously flour your hands and sprinkle flour over the dough ball. Scoop out dough and knead about ten times until dough is “rubbery” and feels elastic. You will know the feeling when you get there.
  5. Roll out and cut with cookie cutters. Obviously, I love dog bone shapes, but they really can be anything. Dog’s don’t care about the shape, just the taste.
  6. Bake at 325 for about 30 minutes.

Check to make sure they are hard, like overbaked cookies. The longer you bake them the harder they become. If you want softer cookies, for older dogs then bake for less time.

Let cool and then watch the drooling begin.
